What Is a Neurotoxin and How Does It Work? The Ella Effect

Neurotoxins have garnered significant attention in recent years, especially in skincare. These substances, which can initially seem intimidating, play a crucial role in various cosmetic treatments. This article will explore what neurotoxins are, how they work in skincare, their benefits, common treatments, and safety considerations.

Definition and Basics of Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins are chemicals that affect the nervous system. In skincare, they are used for their ability to temporarily paralyze muscles.

This muscle relaxation helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The most commonly known neurotoxin in skincare is botulinum toxin, which is used in treatments like Botox.

Botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. Without these signals, the targeted muscle can’t contract.

The result is a smoother, more relaxed appearance of the overlying skin. This principle has made neurotoxins a popular choice for non-surgical cosmetic treatments.

How Neurotoxins Work in Skincare

In skincare, neurotoxins are injected into specific facial muscles. The injections are typically quick and minimally invasive. The neurotoxin prevents the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that tells muscles to contract.

By blocking this signal, the muscles relax, leading to a reduction in the appearance of dynamic wrinkles—those that form due to repetitive facial movements like frowning or squinting.

The effects of neurotoxin injections are temporary, usually lasting between three to six months. Over time, the treated muscles regain their ability to contract as the neurotoxin is gradually metabolized and eliminated by the body. Regular sessions are often required to maintain the desired results.

Benefits of Neurotoxin Treatments for Skincare

Neurotoxin treatments offer several benefits for those looking to improve their skin’s appearance.

One primary advantage is the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines, like on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. This can lead to a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Additionally, neurotoxin treatments can be tailored to the individual’s needs. Depending on the patient’s preference and the practitioner’s technique, they can achieve a subtle, natural-looking result or a more dramatic change.

The procedures are relatively quick, often completed within 15 to 30 minutes, and require minimal downtime, allowing patients to go back to their daily activities almost immediately.

Beyond wrinkle reduction, neurotoxins can also address other cosmetic concerns. For example, they can help with the appearance of a gummy smile, reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and even slim the jawline by relaxing the masseter muscles.

Common Neurotoxin Treatments in Skincare

Botox is the most well-known neurotoxin treatment in skincare, but other brands and formulations are available, such as Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Each product has unique properties and may be chosen based on the patient’s specific needs or the practitioner’s preference.

  1. Botox: The original and most widely recognized neurotoxin treatment. It treats moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead.
  2. Dysport: Known for its fast-acting results, Dysport spreads more easily than Botox, making it ideal for treating larger areas like the forehead.
  3. Xeomin: A purified form of botulinum toxin that does not contain accessory proteins. It’s a good option for patients who may develop resistance to other neurotoxins.
  4. Jeuveau is the newest addition to the market, often referred to as “Newtox.” It is similar to Botox and is used to treat similar areas of the face.

Safety and Precautions

While neurotoxin treatments are generally safe, they must be administered by a qualified professional to ensure the best results and minimize risks. Common side effects include minor bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site.

Rare but serious side effects can occur if the toxin spreads beyond the target area, leading to muscle weakness or difficulty swallowing.

Patients should always seek treatments from licensed and experienced practitioners to ensure safety. Before undergoing treatment, it’s also important to discuss any medical history, allergies, or concerns with the provider.

Specific Treatments:

Brow Lift

A brow lift involves a quick neurotoxin treatment that lasts 2-4 months. It slightly raises the brows, focusing on the edge/tail, and is especially helpful for those with heavy upper eyelid hooding or tired eyes. The charge is flat.

Lip Flip/Gummy Smile Reduction

A lip flip is a quick neurotoxin procedure that shows more of the upper lip’s pink portion. Results appear in 3-14 days. It’s a great option for those hesitant about lip fillers, lasting 4-12 weeks. It is ideal for those with thin lips who are building with filler.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) Treatment

Neurotoxin injections in the underarms, palms, or soles shut down sweat production for 3-6 months. The rate is a flat $1500 per area.

Microtoxin (Neck or Décolleté)

Microtoxin involves injecting neurotoxins into the skin’s dermis to improve texture, soften wrinkles, and relax muscles without affecting their functionality. It’s effective for “gooseneck” texture, horizontal neck lines, skin tightening, improving platysmal bands on the neck, and reducing crepe skin on the décolleté.

Migraine Relief, Masseter/TMJ Reduction, Calf Slimming, Trapezius Slimming, or Trigger Point

Neurotoxins are injected into muscles to alleviate symptoms like headaches, jaw pain, migraines, and back, neck, and shoulder muscle pain. Relief from trigger point injections lasts 2-6 months.

For TMJ or muscle slimming, the protocol includes an initial treatment, a one-month follow-up, a re-treatment at 3-4 months, and semi-annual treatments. Usual treatment starts at 20+ units for TMJ and 50+ units per side for muscle slimming at $13/unit, with additional units often needed at follow-up.

The Bottom Line

Neurotoxins play a significant role in modern skin care, effectively reducing wrinkles and achieving a youthful appearance.
